Back Pain

Back pain is a common problem and is frequently secondary to mechanical back pain or osteoarthritis (wear and tear). Sciatica occurs when a prolapsed intervertebral disc causes nerve compression and leads to low back or buttock pain radiating down the leg. Symptoms frequently resolve spontaneously and can be treated with simple analgesia.

It is important to discuss persistent or severe symptoms with your doctor so that serious pathology can be excluded. Your doctor can organise a GP management plan for chronic back pain, including referrals for physiotherapy and exercise physiology. In some cases it may be necessary to be referred to a pain specialist.
