Heart Disease

Heart disease is one of Australia’s largest health problems. Its two major forms are heart attack and angina. The risk factors which contribute to heart disease (and also stroke) are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, overweight and obesity, physical inactivity, low fruit and vegetable intake, alcohol and smoking. The good news is that heart disease is largely preventable by healthy lifestyle and screening with your doctor for raised blood pressure and cholesterol. If you are over 45 years talk to your doctor about a 45-49 years old health assessment.

Following a heart attack, careful attention to minimising risk factors with the help of your doctor will reduce the risk of recurrence or complications. Your doctor can organise a GP management plan and arrange referrals to a dietician and exercise physiologist for specialised advice about diet and exercise. Medicare will subsidise these appointments to allied health professionals for up to five visits per year.
